Treatment of the popliteal cyst in the rheumatoid knee.

چکیده
THEORY It is axiomatic that active rheumatoid disease may produce a large effusion into the knee, and it has been shown that quadriceps contraction causes a large rise in intracapsular pressure (Jayson and Dixon 1970a). The weakest point of the capsule yields to the rise in pressure: protrusion occurs into the popliteal fossa and may track into the calf. Elimination of the cause of fluid production should, therefore, result in the disappearance of the cyst.

An Anteriorly Presenting ‘Wrap Around’ Popliteal Cyst
The article describes a case in which a popliteal cyst was identified presenting as a mass on the anterior aspect of theright tibia. This occurred as a result of polyethylene wear debris from previous total knee arthroplasty. Although alternativediagnoses for an anterior tibial mass are more likely, a popliteal cyst must be considered, particularly if the patient has ahistory of total knee arth...

Popliteal cyst (Baker’s cyst) was first described by Adams in 1840, popularized by Baker in 1877, and was theorized as an enlarged gastrocnemiussemimembranosus bursa that communicated with the knee and trapped synovial fluid.1 Numerous bursa are located in the popliteal space between the knee ligaments, hamstring tendons, gastrocnemius muscle, and collateral ligaments. The two proposed etiologi...

Baker's cyst, or popliteal cyst, is a fluid-filled mass that is a distention of a preexisting bursa in the popliteal fossa, most commonly the gastrocnemio-semimembranosus bursa. This bursa is unique in that it communicates with the knee joint, unlike other periarticular bursae, via an opening in the joint capsule posterior to the medial femoral condyle. Many have theorized that this opening cre...

Septic arthritis associated with extra-articular abscess is rare. We report on 2 non-rheumatic patients with septic arthritis of the knee associated with calf abscess. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a distinct leakage pathway from the knee joint in each patient. One was a ruptured popliteal cyst (posteromedial). Another was a pathologic popliteus hiatus (posterolateral). These patients under...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of arthroscopic knee cavity internal drainage and cyst cavity debridement operation of popliteal cyst in knee osteoarthritis patients. METHODS From August 2007 to March 2013, 58 knee osteoarthritis patients with popliteal cyst were treated with arthroscopic knee cavity internal drainage through posteromedial portal and poplitea...
